Alice in Wonderland

Alice- Child/Hero

Alice is basically the hero in the story, but she is also a child. She is very curious and likes to explore. It makes sense that she is the hero because she is in her own dream. At the end of the book when she wakes up it says, “‘Oh, I’ve had such a curious dream!’ said Alice, and she told her sister, as well as she could remember them, all these strange Adventures of hers” (65). After telling her sister about her dreams, her sister is then inspired to dream as well.

Caterpillar-Mentor

The Caterpillar gives Alice lots of advise. He is a little confusing, but he is wise for being a character in Wonderland. In the book it says, “In a minute or two the Caterpillar took the hookah out of its mouth and yawned once or twice, and shook itself. Then it got down off the mushroom, and crawled away in the grass, merely remarking as it went, ‘One side will make you grow taller, and the other side will make you grow shorter.’” When Alice meets the Caterpillar she felt as though she was too small. The caterpillar helped her with a way to grow or shrink.

Cheshire Cat- Trickster

The Cheshire Cat is my favorite character. He is very mysterious and can even disappear! In the book it says, “The Cat’s head began fading away the moment he was gone, and, by the time he had come back with the Duchess, it had entirely disappeared; so the King and the executioner ran wildly up and down looking for it, while the rest of the party went back to the game.” (44). In the book they were discussing how to behead him but only his head had appeared. He tricked all of them by disappearing completely.

Mad Hatter-Jester

The Mad Hatter is a funny little character. He is a fun character to read about. Whenever he talks it makes no sense and he is completely random. The history behind the Mad Hatter is back in olden times hatters used mercury in their hats and so they literally were mad. In the book it says, “The Hatter opened his eyes very wide on hearing this; but all he said was, ‘Why is a raven like a writing-desk?’” (33). This shows how random he is, and he didn’t even know the answer! The Mad Hatter is definitely a Jester

Queen-Villain/Boss

The Queen of Hearts is the boss over everyone. If you do something she doesn’t like, you get beheaded. At the very end of the dream she says, “‘Off with her head!’ the Queen shouted at the top of her voice.” (64). She says that a lot, but the difference here is that she is now talking to Alice. Right after she says this the cards attack Alice and she wakes up. If you attack the main character, I’m pretty sure they are the bad guy.
